Update on Illegal, Endangered Fin Whale Meat Shipment (through Russia to Japan from Iceland).
The shipment of Icelandic Fin whale meat onboard the Winter Bay was delivered to Osaka, Japan after transiting the Northeast passage over the top of Russia. Whale meat from a previous shipment was dumped by the Japanese because of high mercury content. A store in Hong Kong was charged last week for selling whale meat from Japan with a high mercury content. This trade is not only a threat to endangered Fin whales but also a threat to human health.
Can Russia not simply ban the trans-shipment of whale meat through Russian waters. The Icelanders cannot ship via the Suez or Panama Canals. Their only avenue for shipment is through Russian waters.
Russia could lead the way in worldwide protection and conservation of cetaceans by banning all whale and dolphin products and banning the capture of Orcas and other dolphins for display in marine aquariums.
