John I. Bitove Chair and CEO Priszm Canadian Income Fund

Dear Mr. Bitove,
Your attempt to spin your company’s involvement in the crippling and drugging of millions of animals each year is a turn-off. Claiming that “everyone else is doing it” doesn’t absolve your company of its own responsibilities, and claiming that you audit your suppliers is nonsense, since even your own animal welfare panelists don’t know about any audit program—and you’ve been unable to supply a single detail to PETA, the media, or the public.
I’m no more convinced by your duplicity than my fellow Canadians Dr. David Suzuki, Farley Mowat, and Elizabeth May, who recently filed a Competition Bureau complaint against your company for misleading the public about the fact that chickens raised for food in Canada have every natural desire thwarted and that they are bred and drugged up so that they can’t even walk, cooped in their own excrement for their entire lives, and often scalded to death while they are still completely conscious. If KFC treated dogs or cats as abusively as it treats chickens, Mr. Bitove, you could be prosecuted for the crime of cruelty to animals.
I intend to do what I can to let consumers in Canada and around the world know about my new video, which PETA has made available free for viewing or download at www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com, so that everyone can decide for themselves whether the gruesome cruelty to animals perpetrated by KFC is “ethical.”
I’ll join you for lunch when you’re ready to announce that KFC Canada will adopt PETA’s four-point animal welfare program, which is endorsed by the world’s leading animal welfare experts, including members of your own animal welfare panel.
Until then, you’ll be dining alone.

Sincerely,

Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico

The Honorable Bill Richardson
Governor of New Mexico
New Mexico State Capitol, 4th Fl.
Santa Fe, NM 87501

Dear Governor Richardson:
I was amazed to hear that the cruel spectacle of cockfighting is still legal in New Mexico. Two
roosters are armed with razor-sharp knives and prompted to stab each other until one is dead or too badly injured to continue the “game.”
New Mexico offers an abundance of art, film, and other forms of entertainment that make it a
culturally rich place to live as well as to visit—but cockfighting is a turnoff. Considering that two thirds of voters want the state to ban cockfighting—which 48 other states have already done, most of them 100 years ago—I wonder why New Mexico’s legislators have not taken action. Please take a leadership position and guide the law through the legislature in 2005.
The whole country is watching, especially Hollywood, which your office actively courts for the
film business.

Sincerely,
Pamela Anderson

Göran Persson, Prime Minister of Sweden

June 29, 2004

Dear Göran Persson,
It has come to my attention that you are about to ban fur farming in Sweden. I have fought against fur for a long time, especially here in the U.S., and it made me very happy to hear that you are following in the footsteps of the many other European countries that have already banned this cruel industry.
Animals raised for fur, such as minks, foxes, and chinchillas, spend their entire lives confined to tiny, filthy cages, constantly circling and pacing back and forth from stress and boredom. Some animals even revert to self-mutilating and cannibalizing their cage-mates.In the winter, caged animals have nowhere to seek refuge from freezing temperatures, rain, and snow. During the summer, hundreds of thousands of animals endure searing heat and suffer from dizziness and vomiting before dying from heat exhaustion. Baby animals are the most common victims, as they succumb to dehydration faster.
The horrible conditions in which these fur-bearing animals are forced to live on fur farms differ substantially from their natural environments. A mink, for example, moves around a lot within a big territory, which could be a few kilometers long. Minks always live near water and use many dens.
I’m impressed with how far Sweden has come regarding issues like equality between the sexes, social justice, and the environment. I also know that most of the people in your country care about animals and are against fur farming. Getting rid of this hideous industry for good will be a natural step for Sweden.
I want you to know that there are many people abroad who look up to Sweden’s progressive
example. This fur ban will definitely strengthen your country’s reputation in the world
community.

Best regards,
Pamela Anderson

Dear Mr. Bitove:
I am shocked to learn from my pals at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that KFC has refused to take steps to eliminate some of the worst abuses suffered by the hundreds of millions of chickens who are killed for your restaurants in Canada, in the U.S., and overseas. If people knew how KFC treats chickens, they’d never eat another drumstick.
Please face the facts: KFC is torturing birds and then trying to pretend that there is nothing wrong with that. In the 21st century, we’re advanced enough to oppose all cruelty and injustice, whether the victims are animals or people.
I am asking that you direct KFC’s suppliers to stop breeding and drugging animals so that they become crippled under their own hefty bulk, that you ensure that KFC’s suppliers stop scalding birds to death, and that you adopt the other key improvements that PETA has recommended(see KentuckyFriedCruelty.com), which are all based on the work of members of your own apparently powerless and long-ignored “animal-welfare panel.”
What KFC does to 750 million chickens each year is not civilized or acceptable, and you can help change that. Cruelty is cruelty, and KFC is being cruel in the extreme.
I am calling for a boycott of all KFC restaurants until my friends at PETA tell me that you have agreed to be kinder in your practices.

Sincerely,
Pamela Anderson
