Wonderland Magazine - PAMELA ANDERSON, Angel in America and eternal bombshell, she’s one of a kind.

F9AT9900.jpg

To some forever best known for her five-year stint in a red swimsuit (a role reprised in 2003 and 2017 respectively), Pamela Denise Anderson is the sum of parts far more extensive than any 90s TV show, even if it was a classic like Baywatch.

Landing the cover of Playboy in October 1989 (she returned, not for the first time, to front the title’s final nude issue early last year), the actress in conversation with Harriet Verney today is most consumed, to the foreign eye at least, with activism.

Her Instagram – a monochrome showcase of personal throwbacks and iconic females – boasts an anti-fur stamp for a profile picture while her relationship with Vivienne Westwood, and its accompanying political components, are widely recognised; then there are her friendships within the art world – Ed Ruscha and Jeff Koons are both pals.

The shoot was done in beautiful Marseille. What is it you love about France?

Marseille is a beautiful place to call ‘home’ for now. The South of France is a blessed place to be; I knew somehow I’d end up here. I love France. I love the language. I love Paris – I prefer to be surrounded by culture – and learning a new language has been a fun challenge. This experience, for many reasons, none expected, has kept me engaged in the world, and I feel very loved here.

What is one of the biggest hurdles you have overcome?

Hurdles are most likely related to my own demons, my earliest memories and how that didn’t help me – and left me unequipped re all attempts at love. Men are my downfall. And muse. I think finding my passion as an artist despite a full life. I feel something is missing. I write, paint, draw, meditate, dance. I refuse to play the game – social media seems corrupt…vacant – and an opportunity of handled creatively. I just started to participate. I do not have the answers, I want to explore acting, directing even more. I play a character every day. Anyone that knows me, tells me this. And if you follow me – not the many fake accounts – you pick up on an authentic attempt to share my inner world. It’s a thread, it’s not blatant. It’s an experiment.

And what is your proudest moment to date?

My boys make me proud every day. They are real genuine, charismatic additions to the world. The world is better with them in it. I love them so much. Watch for them, they are a force, coming strong.

You’ve been a sex symbol for years. What is sexy to you now?

Sexy is a state of mind – a life-long adventure. Courage and intelligence in a man, and wisdom, mystery and a will to learn continuously in a woman will keep you sexy till your last day.

Have you ever met any of your icons?

I’ve met Jane Fonda – and we have plotted… I’ve spoken to Brigitte Bardot on the phone a few times. And we have worked together fighting for animal rights in France.

What is the biggest misconception about yourself?

I wouldn’t know the answer to this… fully. I never led a calculated life or a PR campaign to manufacture an image. I led my life the old fashion way – on my own. Carving my own path and paying little attention to the tabloids. I can see looking back I was vulnerable – and even my own strength, determination and resilience shock me.

Pamela Anderson’s spotted “goddaughter” seen with a cub

The female Amur leopard Leo 38F who was named by the actress and member of Advisory Council of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) Pamela Anderson was seen accompanied by a cub. According to the photo monitoring data of “Land of the Leopard”, this cub was the leopardess Pamela’s firstling.

The certificate of the Leopard Guardian was delivered to Pamela Anderson in December 2015 in the Kremlin. Sergey IvanovSpecial Representative of the President of Russia for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport, and Sergey Donskoi, the Head of Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation let the actress know about the nature of the rare feline and measures for its protection. The actress took a liking to the graceful leopardess and named her after herself – Pamela.

In late 2015, a young female Leo 38F was just starting her adult life. She was extremely cautious and rarely appeared before cameras, most often at night. After two years the large cat’s behaviour has changed considerably – she became more courageous and active. Now automatic cameras record Pamela several times every half-year. By the way, not long ago the leopardess was “captured” on trail camera with an almost adult cub.

For the first time the camera shows a young cub obediently treading exactly in its mother’s footsteps. It is interesting that before that leopardess Pamela managed to keep her cub off the radar for about a year.

By all appearances, female leopard Leo 38F is a very good mother eagerly guarding her cub, - says Tatiana Baranovskaya, Director of FSBI “Land of the Leopard”. – This skill is requisite for preservation of the rare animal population. But what also matters much in this issue is the beauty of both - the leopardess herself and her Guardian because this is the power which literally helps us to save Amur leopard.”

The joyful news of the addition to the “goddaughter’s” family in the “Land of the Leopard” was brought to Pamela Anderson.- " I am thrilled for Pamela. That she has become a mother - the most beautiful gift - that keeps giving. I’m excited to hear this and thank IFAW!, Sergey Ivanov, Amur Leopard and the Russian government for their commitment to repopulating and protecting the fragile leopard community in Russia. This is incredible news. "

The leopardess Pamela’s cub will probably leave its mother very soon. The later records of the young cub show that sometimes it already walks alone. Now the researchers wait for the young leopard to find its own territory and to be “captured” by another trail camera. Only then this new member of the leopard community will be assigned the identification number.

Pamela Anderson on Manifestos, Motivation and Westwood

The actress and model outlines the philosophies and heartfelt friendship she shares with Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler - AnOther Magazine - Interview by Sophie Bew - Photographs by Juergen Teller

Having bonded over mutual political passions and been enchanted by one of Vivienne Westwood's show manifestos, Pamela Anderson became quickly and intensely enmeshed in Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler's inclusive world. Between campaigning with the duo and reguarly reaping their wisdom and philosophies, Anderson has become something of an ambassadress for the brand. Appearing in countless ad campaigns shot by Juergen Teller – often accompanied by the couple themselves and embodying their wildly playful approach – she has found herself inextricably linked with the designers’ outré approach to freedom and fashion. A 30-page portfolio in AnOther Magazine Autumn/Winter 2017 examines the impact of pioneers Westwood and Kronthaler, and would be incomplete without the voices of their key collaborators. This talk with Pamela Anderson is one of a series of discussions outlining the curious and colourful world of Westwood.

AnOther Magazine: Can you tell me a little about how you came to meet Vivienne?

Pamela Anderson: I first met Vivienne while we were campaigning for Leonard Peltier’s release when she asked me to sign a petition. Soon after, I was invited to a Vivienne Westwood fashion show – I read her manifesto (the literature that was on every seat) and I was more fascinated with that than the clothes. She spoke my language, referencing fairy tales and mythology. It is still one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I know. It ignited me or confirmed for me, that I was on the right track. It makes perfect sense and, I think between the two of us, perfect sense rarely applies: It is a mad, mad world.

AM: What was that first encounter like?

PA: She said to me, “I don’t have to draw you a map.” We related to each other because we used everything we are, and everything we had and have, to try and make a difference in the world. A lot is gut instinct as well as art, intelligence, culture… she also introduced me to Julian Assange — Julian and Vivienne are two of my greatest teachers.

369814.jpg

AM: You’ve shot a few campaigns with Vivienne Westwood and Juergen Teller, can you tell me a little about the atmosphere on set?

PA: It’s always fun to spend time with friends on shoot photos. I love shooting with them because it’s like telling a story: Vivienne and Andreas are always conveying a message – maybe Vivienne more than Andreas, Andreas loves fashion and Vivienne is political and motivated by the end of the world. We need to do something. I know that’s what I’m thinking in the photos: utter despair, the apocalypse, love, hope, giving up?, frustration, anger, relief… HELP?

AM: What is it you’re trying to conjure then?

PA: I think it’s quite interesting to have these beautiful clothes on all different types of people: the models usually participate in some kind of interview. What is their story? Where are they from? What are their concerns for the planet? What can they do to make a difference? That sets the tone.

AM: Any favourite shoot memories or locations?

PA: I loved our last shoot on the Island of Hydra in Greece… with all its sentimental history; you can feel the artist energy there. But I also love our other very spontaneous shoots- when I’ve just happened to be in London, and they are shooting - the three of us dressing each other in a small space. I remember just the three of us in our underwear or less pulling on stockings, then Vivienne narrating the shoot: “We are warriors…” from a specific time etc.

AM: What do you have in common with Vivienne and Andreas?

PA: We care deeply about the world. We believe that engaging in the world is important, that artists are the freedom fighters of the world.

AM: Is her blend of fashion and revolution important to you?

PA: I think it’s very important, and a great billboard for important messages she is trying to convey. She reaches many this way.

AM: What is Vivienne’s impact on fashion?

PA: Her impact on fashion has been tremendous: she has such a unique vision, punk, it’s beautifully tragic. It is such a dichotomy, to have this couture brand, and the world falling apart at the same time.

AM: Why is it important?

PA: It is her voice, her vehicle. It is education, trying to free the world by educating it: we must switch to green energy, we must support whistleblowers, we must save the rainforest, Venice… and treat refugees with respect. We need to turn all the prisons vegan – food politics and poverty, it’s an endless battle. And it’s important to use our strengths to help. We are hanging by a thread at our own hand: we are all climate refugees and it’s not going to get better while people don’t want to understand what the governments are doing. As complex as it is, it is simple: we must learn. Intellectuals unite!

AM: Can you describe working with Vivienne and Andreas as a couple?

PA: They are so in love, it is beautiful. I know how proud Andreas is of Vivienne and she of him. It is sweet when I am with each one of them alone, they gush over the other. We should all be so lucky to find our soulmates, they are truly the perfect match.

AM: Does their personal relationship emerge?

PA: They are a normal couple full of passion and disagreements. They have separate interests and Vivienne is a force for culture, and Andreas too. They both know so much about so many different things: Andreas is very calming too and reminds us to still enjoy the world as messy as it is – it is beautiful. And we must live joyfully, you can see that in his collections as well: JOY. I love being around them, I take a lot of notes.

You must pay attention to her blog Climate Revolution and you can get a peek into their world: they travel, read, ride their bikes, they walk the talk and are constantly learning. They inspire me to do the same. What we must consume is art and literature, not things: fill our brains, not our closets, Vivienne and Andreas would agree. Buy one beautiful dress a year, don’t consume crap!

AM: What do you think they bring together in their collaboration?

PA: Well they are very different and very the same, it is magic. Andreas says if there are no tears it’s not good enough. They work very, very hard and live simply, they do not over indulge. It is unnecessary when you are passionately living. They balance each other – this is only my observation but I feel close enough to them that I can ramble on a bit – they will be one of the fascinating love stories that history will remember.

Goodbye Hef

124386.jpg

Mr Hefner
I have so many thoughts, I have no brain n right now to edit
I am me because of you
You taught me everything important about freedom and respect.
Outside of my family
You were the most important person in my life.
You gave me my life... People tell me all the time
That I was your favorite...
I'm in such deep shock.
But you were old,
your back hurt you so much.
Last time I saw you
You were using a walker.
You didn't want me to see.
You couldn't hear.
You had a piece of paper in your pocket you showed me -
with my name Pamela with a heart
around it.

Now,
I'm falling apart.
This feeling is so crazy.
It's raining in Paris now.
I'm by the window.
Everything anyone loves about me is because you understood me.
Accepted me
and encouraged me to be myself.
Love like no one else.
Live recklessly
With unfiltered abandon.
You said the magazine was about a girl like me. That I embody the spirit you fantasized about.
I was the one.
You said.

I can hear you say -

Be brave.
There are no rules.
Live your life
I'm proud of you.
There are no mistakes.
And with men -
Enjoy ... (Your wonderful laugh)
You have the world by the tail
You are a good girl
And
you are so loved -
You are not crazy.
You are wild and free
Stay strong,
Stay vulnerable. ... "It's movie time"

You loved my boys ... You were always, always there for us.
With your love
Your crazy wisdom.
I will miss your everything.
Thank you for making the world a better place.
A freeer and sexier place.
You were a gentleman
charming, elegant, chivalrous
And so much fun.
Goodbye Hef ... Your Pamela

What are your thoughts and feelings on the state of America in 2017?

America has always been a divided country; a country with lots of skeletons in its closet. This goes against the story we tell ourselves, but it's true. It always boils under the surface, but at times like this it all comes out and we can't pretend anymore. This is a dangerous time, but it is also a time of opportunity. We can make everything worse or we can use this moment of awareness to put injustices right and begin to heal. I am hopeful.

Do you think young people are more interested now in seeking out the truth in terms of power and the political or are they too obsessed with false narratives and social media surface? Are those two things even mutually exclusive?

Young people are not given nearly enough credit. "Millennials" get blamed for everything! But young people are dealing with a very different world. And they are in a better position to understand the world as it is now. I don't think these two things are exclusive. Social media can be escapist and promote false ideas. But I think young people are aware of this. They don't need to be lectured. And young people are in a better position than ever to think for themselves and question official narratives. They can go around the commercial media, which is often wrong. I think young people are more politically engaged now than they have been in generations.

Your social consciousness appears to have flourished as the years go on. From PETA, Climate change to your work and support of Julian Assange- why are you so passionate about these causes and what spurs you on to continue ?  & Why do you do what you do? What motivates you?

Firstly, the desire to help other living creatures, but secondly, the need to spend my time trying to do something meaningful. Everyone looks for meaning in their lives. I think when we can find meaning in trying to help others, that's better for everyone. That's what motivates me in my activism.

As a kind of storyteller, where do you see yourself in the spectrum of true narratives and false lies in society? Does it matter?

Or false narratives and true lies? Truth matters very much. It is one of the most important of all things, because without it how could we even think about anything else? But we cannot forget the deeper truths that are found in literature, film and art. I try to pursue these deeper truths.

Environmental issues are obviously very close to your heart. Is ecological decline and chaos the thing which terrifies you the most? & Are we living in the end times? Or does every generation feel that sense of the apocalyptic?

I think it has more truth now than it ever has done. The threat to our environment is very serious. It is the most important issue for all of us. I don't think we are living in end times, because I think there are still things that can be done to save the planet. And we must. If a sense of impending doom makes us take all of this seriously, I think it's healthy.

Do you believe in the power of the internet or do the trolls and weirdos put you off?

They do not put me off. The internet didn't invent trolls and weirdos. The world has always been full of strange people! As someone who was a celebrity before the internet became really popular, there were plenty of odd people then too. Some of them even work in show business! What I think has happened is the internet gives everyone the experience of celebrity - all you need is a social media profile and you're visible to everyone in the world. So now everyone has a taste of what it is like when you get unwanted attention like that. What is the solution? If you are famous you have to learn to be a bit cautious, and not put everything in the open. I think it would be nice if the social media companies taught people how to do that, and didn't just lure everyone into a false sense of security. I think the companies should answer for a lot of it.

You’re an American icon who’s been talked about and written about by all kinds of people and in all kinds of ways. Do you read your own press/gossip? Having been in the public eye for so long, do you feel you have control over your own narratives? What does freedom mean to you?

We are not free unless we can have adventures in our life. Unless we have a sense of wonder.

In London... and, for the animals

circus-tiger-standing-up-on-back-legs-1.jpg

The biggest UK priority at the moment is urging the government to follow through on its promise to ban circuses that use wild animals.
PM Theresa May needs to act - it has vast bipartisan majority support but MPs keep sitting on it and saying they'll introduce "when parliamentary time allows". The bill that was drafted 2 years ago after 94% of Britons said they support it.

Austria, Belgium, Holland, Slovenia, Mexico, and many more have banned them -England, which was the first country in the world to pass legislation to protect animals, but is now lagging far behind other countries on this issue.

In some UK circuses, lions and tigers are carted around the country and beaten to perform - until a ban comes into effect, there's nothing to stop circuses from acquiring more wild animals. Circuses force wild animals to live chained inside of cages or pens - whips, muzzles, and electric prods are constant reminders that these animals are being forced to perform out of fear.

While in Stockholm - My thoughts.

I get asked quite often my views on Feminism.
I don't love labels. I am not a 'Feminist'. I am female -
and appreciate the great strides women have fought for with dignity and grace.
But I don't like to be told how to be a woman.
By a woman or a man.
If I want to stay home and raise my children or work - this is my choice and both are admirable -

How wrong is it for a woman to expect the man to build the world she wants, rather than to create it herself?
Anaïs Nin

I do not want to be the leader. I refuse to be the leader. I want to live darkly and richly in my femaleness. I want a man lying over me, always over me. His will, his pleasure, his desire, his life, his work, his sexuality the touchstone, the command, my pivot. I don’t mind working, holding my ground intellectually, artistically; but as a woman, oh, God, as a woman I want to be dominated. I don’t mind being told to stand on my own feet, not to cling, be all that I am capable of doing, but I am going to be pursued, fucked, possessed by the will of a male at his time, his bidding.
Anaïs Nin

I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.
Anaïs Nin

As for 'progressive-ness'

Sweden has a very conservative form of feminism. Quite Victorian. That presents women as helpless innocent victims all the time. (Even Danish and Norwegian feminists are repelled by it)

But perhaps that is an opportunity. Celebrating women's self determination, strength and responsibility and part of that is to treat women as adults who have the strength to harm. And that doing so advances women.

And
I also believe false rape claims should be treated with the same seriousness as rape. And sex laws need more clarity.
Sex is full of mistakes in discovery .. young men's lives are ruined too when we insert fear and blame.
To protect women is admirable.
But young men deserve the same respect.

It's hard to forgive Sweden for what they did to Julian Assange...
adding senselessly to the nightmare. The unfairness.

We both have a passion for truth. I think this is the undercurrent of our connection. In love and war.

I am curious how they use this political carrot- feminism - upping the anti every political cycle to gain votes but mislead women into thinking this is good for them.
I think it's slightly destructive and paralyzing - in relationships.

I feel sorry for young people dating in Sweden.

Parenting is most important. I parent like I love - it is a dance. Esp with boys. To hold their attention gracefully. As a mother we play such complex roles. I always think of. How am I preparing these young men for the world. How will they contribute their hearts, minds and talent... ?

And in my view-
America is not free -

When I speak with Julian - I sometimes try to console him.
People have a hard time with the truth.
They can't bear it.
There is danger in knowledge. And responsibility ..

And this is why some hate... and place blame ... on him and others that reveal it - it is misdirected fear and confusion.

I think Julian and I compliment each other - his voracious appetite for specifics, detailsand
and my poetic madness ...
always.

Makes for an always interesting and sexy vegan lunch.

Pamela
