“Enough is Enough!” Pamela Anderson Teams Up With PAVE to Help End Ongoing Sexual Assault of Ride-Hail App Users

If we were all told as children to not talk to strangers, why do we seem to believe in the inherent safety of getting into a car with one? Ride-hail apps have been problematic since their inception, from the poor treatment of their drivers to the never ending drama between executives and shareholders, but the most harmful on the list of problems are the incidents of drivers sexually assaulting passengers. To date, hundreds of sexual assault incidents have been reported, with multiple class action suits filed. And while these companies claim to be doing everything they can to mitigate this issue, there still seems to be dangerous gaps in the process of vetting drivers.

Enough is enough!

As a response to the never ending allegations of drivers assaulting passengers, PAVE, (Promoting Awareness & Victim Empowerment) has teamed up with the legendary Pamela Anderson to launch a PSA about the dangers of inherently trusting just any driver. Founded in 2001 by Angela Rose in response to her own experience of being kidnapped from a shopping mall and sexually assaulted when she was 17, PAVE empowers students, parents, and civic leaders to end sexual violence with prevention education. Being a victim of sexual abuse herself, Pamela jumped on the opportunity to shed light on this issue and help bring awareness to the fact that this problem is not being adequately addressed.

“I think that the issue of safety of passengers needs to be addressed jointly with the whole way how gig economy works,” says Anderson in between takes during last week’s PSA shoot in Manhattan. ”In addition to pushing for tougher driver screening programs, the position of drivers and conditions under which they operate must be addressed. So Uber and other companies have to stop pretending they are just operating software that links drivers and passengers as they are much more. And with that, comes more responsibility which they so far have largely refused to accept.”

Pamela also notes that this campaign is not an attack on drivers as a whole, but suggests that poor working conditions may be a deterrent for experienced drivers with a penchant for professionalism, leaving the door wide open for those who should not be trusted in the driver’s seat of these vehicles.

“I find it really pathetic how these companies exploit their drivers,” she adds. “They are not considered employed even if they exclusively work for these companies. They get no sick pay, no holiday pay. They are supposed to be liberated entrepreneurs but they are de facto precarious workers exploited by global companies. So, it is important to remember that when trying to fight for safety of passengers, this is not a fight against Uber drivers and this needs to go hand in hand with attempts to draw attention to the conditions under which they operate, and how the companies are taking advantage of them. These issues are linked and should be addressed jointly.”

As a survivor herself, Pamela continues to be a powerful voice for women, in spite of backlash she received over her comments made on a recent episode of Megan Kelly Today which seem to have been taken out of context. After sharing her own story of being bullied by Harvey Weinstein and the fact that she is not surprised about the multitude of allegations against him, she made reference to the fact that throughout her career, she was presented with opportunities and gifts that she vehemently avoided. Some feminist groups took offence to Pamela’s suggestions that women - especially women in Hollywood - need to keep their eyes open and their guards up, and chalked it up to victim blaming.

“I did not say that women deserved being abused or that the pigs like Weinstein were not to be punished,” Pam wrote on her Instagram account following the backlash she received. “Quite [the] opposite. I said myself that Weinstein is a sexist pig and a bully. So this is not victim blaming, but looking at the issue from the angle of women being aware of certain problems and how to spot them and fight them. It is totally hypocritical to ignore this. And it is not helping anyone to ignore the realities in the society we live in. The causes of the problem and solutions are complex and women who do not live in the utopian bubble must be aware of what is going on. And that is what I have highlighted.”

The PSA is scheduled for release on January 9th, 2018.

Pamela Anderson Loves Coco de Mer

I am so excited to present my first lingerie collection, in collaboration with Coco de Mer. Designed by women for women, the collection combines glamour and femininity with a touch of my famous flirtatious fun. A modern take on 1960s pin up, I have chosen my favourite silhouettes to flatter the female form and empower women to look and feel their best.

I think this narrative of "victim blaming" and "lack of solidarity" is trying to coerce me (and others) into consensus on something that should be debated and discussed broadly.

I can tell you that from my experience of working on protectin - be it a protection of journalists and human rights defenders and internet security - there is ALWAYS a call and recommendation to see the issues in their complexity. There is understanding of a need to address the issue on structural and legal level, to punish perpetrators but also to build resiliance and ability of "self-protection". What techniques you should use online, what precautions you should take when covering certain issues as a journalists. There are also a lot of self-protection courses. There is even a well known story of suffragettes learning martial arts and protection when doing activism for right to vote.

I did not say that women deserved being abused or that the pigs like Weinstein were not to be punished. Quite an opposite, I said myself that Weinstein is a sexist pig and a bully.

So this is not victim blaming but looking at the issue from the angle of women being aware of certain problems and how to spot them and fight them. It is totally hypocritical to ignore this. And it is not helping anyone to ignore the realities in the society we live in. The causes of the problem and solutions are complex and women who do not live in the utopian bubble must be aware of what is going on. And that is what I have highlighted.

I do NOT wish apologise for what I said.

And will not get coerced into apology.

This exactly what I am saying is a problem with the contemporary "victimhoood feminism"! The people who subscribe to that notion tolerate and actually expect women to talk about the stories of abuse and experiences with creeps.

But they would NOT tolerate a woman with her own opinion. So pathetic.

Meghan Kelley/Today Show Interview

Somebody had to say this. Please don’t worry. Refer people to my blog and long standing commitment to defending the vulnerable. We have tho power to be safe and free by using common sense. My message is consistent throughout.

Daily beast is anti Wikileaks - and they probably want to discredit me before part 2 (the WL part)

Megyn Kelly is great - I'm happy with interview.

'Hi Pam – So the Megyn Kelly interview aired this morning and some of the media are saying you were victim blaming when you spoke about Harvey Weinstein and women going alone to hotel rooms to meet with producers, etc. I diffused a lot of it by stating “as a victim yourself you would never blame other women and that you are a huge advocate for women, etc.” See below article from the Daily Beast, let me know if you want to say anything so we stay ahead of this. " (from my publicist/Ann)

I don't need any defense - but thank you Ann.

I'm a deep thinker / I have a unique perspective.

And consequence is part of my life. This is great.

I am also an advocate for men.

I just don't agree -

Backlash is good. - I like this.

My position is not 'problematic' because I doesn't fall in line with 'the common herd' or trend.

I'm trying to tell women as an childhood abuse survivor myself - be proactive as an adult who knows better - in defending themselves. Don't get in cars with strangers #rideresponsibly-

Don't go to Hotel rooms alone for an audition. Women are powerful and smart and we can use all our charms in more positive ways.

I think it’s very smart - proactive.

And I stand by what I say.

My mother taught me - protect yourself. Especially with my ‘image’’ - she and I were worried it could give people wrong Impression.

I am not an easy girl and have not had as many partners people might think. I believe in love and commitment and common sense.

This is why I'm usually married.

It is how I feel safe and protected in a sexual relationship.

A monogamous lover is the best and most brave lover I only want intimate sexual experiences - where I can be free to give my wildest fantasies to someone who loves me.

and never have used sex as a weapon. It's just too easy.

To say I am victim blaming completely misconstrues my point. Victims are not to blame, they never are. I, myself, am a victim of sexual abuse, and I know that predators are always to blame - solely and entirely. That doesn’t mean we can’t take common sense measures to keep ourselves safe and avoid harmful situations. Victim trauma has long paved the way; there are always key learnings from which we can all benefit. It’s the same reason I support Ride Responsibly and say “don’t get into a ride-hail car with a total stranger.” Until drivers for the apps undergo stricter background checks, I say “think before you app.”

Hopefully now we are all armed and empowered and can take steps to protect our own safety and well being.

All blame lies completely with the predators themselves. I am just saying the more you know, the safer you are. This is a very powerful moment in time, and everyone has a lot to learn from all this. In light of all these revelations, if a business associate invites you to his hotel room – or if you are sent there by a liaison of his – and he answers the door in his bathrobe, you should walk away. We can now learn from these unforgivable crimes and take steps to protect ourselves.

Pamela Anderson opens up to Megyn Kelly on everything from the perils of being a woman in Hollywood to dealing with her trauma as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. She says people underestimate her: "If I form a complete sentence, I'm a genius."

Pamela Anderson opens up to Megyn Kelly about her work with the Ride Responsibly campaign, her abusive relationship with ex-husband Tommy Lee, and friendship with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, whom she calls "funny" and "brilliant," though she adds, "I wouldn't call it a romantic relationship."

Before I met Julian - I was writing a play/stage show for off Broadway - I had Sean Penn in mind for the Steve McQueen role. And was going through a sticky divorce.
Julian had seen this poem somehow. It peaked his interest in meeting me. It's been awhile since I read it. And it is a work in progress. I'm going to create a show for Crazy Horse in Paris.
Most likely for a July 2018-

This might be the inspiration :

I know it's bad for you...
But, this is when I wish,
I had a cigarette-
something I've never tried- (light up)
some kind of relief..
I wish it was Italy 40 years ago--
The moon rising over the Amphitheater--
to tremendous applause... like Herzog (clap)
Europeans don't seem to care about silly
smoking laws?,
We do what we want anyway -
behind closed doors--
Our true character, collective complexities.
childish activities -
patterns- genetics? Attention deficit-
- ...SEX ... a lost art-- a sickness--
Lost sensuality -
The cruel smell of orange blossoms...
I love being in love-- but expectations,
make it impossible to be happy-

I've tried... so hard..
maybe it's not in fashion--
Tradition...just seemed so romantic...,
I guess it's a used up ideal --
for the old fashion...
not modern...frown emoticon
Female security... lost-
no way--
Coded, and loaded Cell phones,
Computers --
Ordering sex on line-
is like ordering a book on Amazon--
and ... snooping eats you alive--
A mirrored action. obsessive love...
hopeless- knocked sideways--
There is always this feeling -
of discontent--
Like something is off...
I can't put my finger on why--
Who wants to be the Warden--
I want out of here-- out of this time --
in space--
Grey, muted crystals,
from unsavory places-
bad intentions,
dull- no fire-- a secret life -
Laying in my hotel bed--
pulling up my stockings- carefully
re-attaching to the garter- ,
The Cuban heel- the line
(right on course)
the works...
Feeling a little guilty-
I started to fantasize--
Il Postino, Pablo Neruda-
Should I go to Capri--?
So frustrated--
burning... questions...
No man knows what to do with me--
I blame myself--
To play with me, is eternal--
I'm not 'on the clock' or...
on the 'payroll'--
I had to get out of the room-
The velvet stuff and porcelain things
closing in on me--
What have I done...?
I knew it was wrong from the start--
primitive-- base instinct..

Euros from a Vagabond..
Just start walking - (Like Jeanne Moreau and

Never look back-
There is only beauty ahead,
I almost forgot where I was-- shit--

A Park-ay floor...

BG- She stopped to admire it's clever design,
ME- "So pretty"
BG wrapped herself up---
She snuck out the door with a quiet click,
and Seamlessly, floating down the hall- (on wire)
Her Tom Ford feet didn't

Falling gracelessly into an elevator
playing Nat King Cole's .... Stardust?
(remembering the movie)
ME- "Fallen Angel?"
BG Nobody was up yet-
out into the cool world she goes,
I can breathe..."
BG- looking for a little human contact?
Playful seduction? ...
ME- "I'm so Hungry..."
BG- Her heart was racing---
It was barely dawn --
Bathed in perfect light-
magic hour-- --
ME- "Everyone looks good this early"
BG- Even cats and hummingbirds
Was anyone watching her..
She gazed up into dark windows...
to nobody...
and let the jacket fall loosely around
her shoulders...
The rush coming back- ...
a little lost on purpose,
Hiding around corners,
ME- so dangerous-
my body is on fire....
my body is never done-- trouble finds me--
please find me-
The iron is always hot!"
BG- She Leaned against the cool wall of a
stoney church-
It felt good, soothing-
ME- I wonder how prostitution works-
Does it ever feel good?
Lost little souls - being taken advantage of--
or taking advantage of-
Is it just for money? Is it for attention?
or --- both--
Women suffer-
- Everywhere...
rules, rules, rules--
conflicting needs..
I can't find the answers-- It's an epidemic--
I know I won't compete with a computer, PlayStation,

make them bark like seals --?
How does that work?"
BG- She was disturbed--
How far can she take this?-- Is it even real?--
ME- "Have we lost men to thin air---

The world creeps up on you--
and there you are,
ALL over the place-
places you never intended to be-- (desert storm?)
I am human you know--
left to adjust to the madness-
No mercy- pay the price-- my fault-
BG- feeling empty, sad-- withdrawn-
Left to Isolate-- Medicate.

ME-NO! I wont- -
ME- You know- It's not freaky enough,
to just be beautiful--
I've never felt beautiful-

To attract what?
When did I go from a curious little girl,
to an insatiable woman? Girl on the run...
Femme fatale... devoted and ....divided.
Are we all going crazy? -

What inspired you to become a voice for the safety of female passengers in ride hail apps like Uber and Lyft and what do you hope to accomplish through this PSA? I think it is worth to mention here overall problems with gig economy. I find it really pathetic how these companies exploit their drivers - they are not considered employed even if they exclusively work for these companies. They get no sick pay, no holidays pay. They are supposed to be liberated entrepreneurs but they are de facto precarious workers exploited by global companies. So it is important to remember that when trying to fight for safety of passengers, this is not a fight against Uber drivers and this needs to go hand in hand with attempts to draw attention to the conditions under which they operate, and how the companies are taking advantage of them. These issues are linked and should be addressed jointly.

What are your thoughts on the #MeToo hashtag campaign? does it unite victims or is it problematic? There is no excuse for sexual harassment and abuse and any industry, not just entertainment and Hollywood, has responsibility to eradicate itin their respective field. To be honest, i have been really critical of this "campaign"... it is actually not even a campaign, campaigns usually have a target and objectives and i am not sure this does. But that is a minor point. I personally think that this "campaign" is not helping anything and anyone... there are so many issues with it. Just to name few:- we are not creating some myth that nobody knew about sexual harassment, we just woke up it existed.... or we were all aware of it but women were scared of talking about it. Which begs a question of what has been feminist movement doing for last 50 years that women were not empowered to speak out but now, some hashtag liberates them. To me, this looks like justifying something we want to believe in while it is not there.

- Sexual harassment should be dealt with when it happens, and there should be proper processes to deal with it. Nothing changes is someone writes about it on social media.

- Trial by mob. If we believe in rule of law and proper procedures, we should believe in innocent till proven guilty. It has not happened in many of the recent cases.

- On psychology level, there are actually studies that expressing rage on social media diminishes ability and willingness to actually deal with it in the real like. this is a very good article on it www.wired.com/story/the-problem-with-me-too-and-viral-outrage/in summary "however, #MeToo is a too-perfect meme. It harnesses social media’s mechanisms to drive users (that’s you and me) into escalating states of outrage while exhausting us to the point where we cannot meaningfully act. In other words, #MeToo—despite the best intentions of so many participating—is everything that’s wrong with social media. Outrage is central to the design of most social media platforms—for very good reason. It’s an emotion that inspires sharing, which causes all of us to spend more time engaged with the platform. And that translates directly to revenue for the companies."

I think that the main problem with these sort of initiatives is that women should not be encouraged to talk about it - to share bad stories. But do something about it beyond social media. And i am not sure that is happening. It seems like everyone will be like, yeh, we outed few people, we cried about it on social media, few weeks in a row, same old story. These are few problems.

Are you surprised by the recent surge in women coming forward or do you believe it was a long time coming? Personally, this comes in certain waves. In 1991, there was Anita Hill (Clarence Thomas controversy) and if you read coverage of that period, it was claimed it was a defining moment against sexual harassment. There were no social media but tons of women were writing to Anita Hill and at least in the USA, the situation very much looked like now... then, 25 years later, the same thing. Maybe this shows that we do not need big eureka moments for this sort of problems but continuous hard work to ensure that problems are resolved rather than being highlighted every quarter of century...

In a recent interview, you mentioned that you identify as an 'anti-feminist'. can you elaborate on what this phrase means to you? i do not think i am anti-feminist!! there is no one "feminism" - there are feminism’s. i have a problem with the contemporary "victim-hood type of feminism" which portraits women as weak victims or "vulnerable". I am an old fashion feminist who believes in equality and empowerment. That women should be empowered and be able to do what they want to do, be it a mother, homemaker, ceo, model, scientist, activist, teacher or anything. So if we do subscribe to the popular notion of "feminism" that women are victims, then i may be anti-feminist ;)

although-the uber recent media coverage:

Uber fined $8.9 million by Colorado for allowing drivers with felony convictions, other driver’s license issues – 11/20/17• Colorado’s public utilities commission claims that Uber had background check information that should have disqualified over 50 people from becoming drivers but allowed them to drive anyway. Uber is facing a class action lawsuit from U.S. riders alleging assault – 11/14/17• two women are calling for Uber to change many of its driver screening practices on behalf of all sexual assault and harassment victims by their drivers.• both women were assaulted by their drivers and claim that Uber misled passengers on thesafety of the service.• the women argue that Uber’s inadequate background checks create a “system within whichbad actors can gain access to vulnerable victims.” California woman sues Uber for negligence in alleged rape by driver – 11/16/17• a woman claims that Uber did not do enough to properly vet the driver who assaulted her.• she is suing for negligence, fraud, assault, battery and emotional distress.• following the assault, the driver was arrested and charged with rape. the criminal case isongoing.• according to the complaint, the driver had a documented history of domestic violence andsexual abuse. Uber driver charged with sex assault – 11/20/17• Uber driver was arrested and charged with sexual assault, assault and disorderly conduct.• victim claims she was in the vehicle with two friends when the driver began asking about her chest size and reached over to grab her chest multiple times. PAVE & NLA position points:• it is critical that ride-hailing apps conduct the strictest possible background checks on all drivers to ensure the utmost safety for all passengers.• ride-hailing apps should be held to the same hiring and operating standards of taxi and private car services.• while these standards and checks cannot completely solve the problem, they are a huge step forward for violence prevention.• sexual assault victims of ride-hailing services must be treated the same as any other victims and must not be blamed in way regardless of why they used the services, their physical/mental state, etc.

*still, i think that the issue of safety of passengers needs to be addressed jointly with the whole way how gig/share economy works and also address the position of drivers and conditions under which they operate. So Uber and other companies have to stop pretending they are just operating software that links drivers and passengers as they are much more. And with that, comes more responsibility which they so far largely refused to accept.

Megyn Kelly/Today Show Interview

- as for thé question re-
Harvey Weinstein/ Trump’s blatant disrespect of women.
A lot of abuse and even more stigmatization comes from supporting political causes that are not popular in mainstream, including hollywood liberal crowds.
I know I’m blacklisted in Hollywood -
It’s ok-
There are a lot of people in Hollywood that don’t agree with my politics but I’m more interested in working with the ones who do...For, I trust my heart
My Instagram and Twitter numbers are crazy. So low - I’m not sure why. It’s a rebellious move to follow me. It’s maybe a bit radical ? But it’s honest. Not popular. I know this.
It only encourages me to work harder to reach more people.
Few in America are pleased with my Assange association -
they cannot let it go.
They refuse to see the truth.
They have to blame someone - it all seems slightly Karmic - though - false allegations turned into a flood of truthful allegations - where the real culprits lay—
Justice is due-
These days,
Î’m sure many men in Hollywood are scared that their awful behaviour and sex abuse will be exposed.
But the whole Hollywood is even more scared of women with an opinion (or even worse, woman with a different opinion than what is popular).

- When it comes to the causes I support, they are all connected by compassion and justice. those are not some random picks - wars, oceans, climate change, violence, refugees, women and abuse- but they are all connected -
I know how all these things are interlinked.

- this is also WHY am I supportive of wikileaks and Julian Assange -He understands all these causes and how local is global.
His main message is JUSTICE.
His key core message in early 2009:
our cause is justice, our tool is transparency.

As for Russian propaganda?
This reminds me of the 1930s and how everything was blamed on the Jews then. And how people are as willing to believe the Russia conspiracy theories as quickly as they used to
believe anti-Semitic ones.
I often tell people when they complain about Russians: "Just replace Russia with the Jews" and it usually sets people straight.
